A phase change cooling vest uses advanced phase change materials (PCMs) to absorb and store heat, thereby keeping your body temperature in check. These vests contain 100% biobased and biodegradable PCM, which solidify at a specific temperature, predefined at 6,5°C / 44°F, 15C/59F, 21C/70F, 24C/74F and 29C/84F). When worn, the PCM absorbs excess body heat and maintains a constant cooling temperature as it changes from solid to liquid.
Phase Change material (PCM) works just like water and ice, but at a different temperature. Like water it is fluid when at or above its designated temperature (which can be 6.5C, 15C, 21C, 24C or 29C) and like ice it is solid when kept some degrees under its designated temperature for some time. When the PCM is solid it can be applied for personal cooling by wearing it close to the body. Ice is too cold for this (it will burn your skin) and will last too short. PCM at 21C is the closest to the natural comfortable temperature, so it is perfect in most circumstances.
Depending on your situation and necessity your choice of the PCM temperature will make a big difference:
The PCM will work until it is completely fluid again. Recharging will need a temperature at least 3 degrees below the PCM designated temperature (i.e. 18C for th2 21C PCM), but will charge faster at lower temperatures.
Unlike evaporative cooling garments, which rely on air flow and humidity, phase change cooling vests offer consistent, reliable cooling regardless of external conditions. This makes them ideal for humid climates, indoor environments, and use under protective clothing like hazmat suits, military gear, or firefighter uniforms.
Our PCM cooling vests are available in two styles: one that uses removable PCM inserts, and the PCM CoolOver, which has fixed, built-in PCM-modules.
The cooling vests with inserts are specially designed vests with pockets where PCM inserts can be placed. This very modular approach offers great flexibility of replacing used PCM inserts or change the vest to offer different cooling temperatures.
The PCM CoolOvers are vests with fixed, not replaceable PCM-modules.
